about me
Hiya! My name is Kat and I am an Ottawa born & based creative with my Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance with a minor in English Literature. At Carleton University, I specialized in performing vocal jazz and pop music, with an affinity for hits from the mid to late 20th century. Oldies, some might say. Classics, if you ask me. Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt. Powerful women of song — a huge love of mine.
When I'm not performing in town, I spend my days caffeinated, teaching, and nurturing my love of the written word through reading whimsical mysteries or writing poetry. I love simple pleasures, like treasure hunting in second-hand shops and scouting out a new cafe. My sister says my space is something of a dragon’s trove. It’s where all interesting, shiny, vintage things go to live once I’ve set sights on them.
I’ve been longing for a headquarters of sorts… somewhere anyone could go to find my various happenings and passions: In. One. Spot! When am I gigging, what am I feeling, how to get and stay in touch...
Well! katarmstrong.ca is ours now!
I could go on… but we have lots of time :)

In 2019, I had never thought of myself as a very hard worker, even as I finished out my second year at university. I have always been clever, creative and talented, but I'd coast by on those things a lot. Unless it was something I was really excited about. And “Escapril”, a daily poetry challenge hosted online by author Savannah Brown, fit that bill excellently. Each day had a unique prompt to follow and all you had to do was write the poem and post it. The month blurred by but was filled with late nights of hustling, hunchbacked over my phone, frantic to get my poem out and up. That May, I mashed together my own set of prompts to keep up the daily habit. I had never been so consistent. I came back in the Fall and created prompts based off of the different product labels at Lush. My “Wintry Words” tied me over until “Escapril” year two…I loved it. The space I'd created for myself to enjoy was bliss. There were missed “deadlines” and plenty of overthinking and oversharing, but Musings of Kat took on a life of its own to me. My little baby. Proof, to myself, that I am a driven, passionate person with so many more creative capabilities than I even know still.
I took every creative writing course I could during undergrad, I worked hard for my English minor, followed Escapril for years, and have posted nearly 400 poems. I even made monthly prompts that a few fellow poets followed too. My tiny splash in the river of the written word made a ripple I’ve been proud of ever since.
There is dust on my desk, it’s true. I have an unfinished draft of my first anthology sitting on my computer, begging to be revised and revived. I have been quiet… but I have never run out of things to say. How ever could I?
More to come, soon.
xoxoxo,
kat

Brief closing remarks...
I hope you have genuinely enjoyed scrolling around my silly webpage. The world is a pretty strange and funny little place and I do believe creativity and imagination are the best burrows in which to nestle oneself safely. Making melodies or musings or any of the other many things I love to breathe life into... Well it's a gift to me and it's all the more special that I get to share it with loved ones and strangers alike. What more can I say? Go enjoy your passions and think of me as you spread love and light around. Okay? xoxoxo!
